Date and place of birth; 1965.
Frankston, Victoria, Australia.
Place of residence; Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
While growing up in Frankston, Victoria, I spent my childhood exploring the countryside and coast of the Mornington Peninsula near Melbourne. Our family holidays were trips to Tasmania visiting relatives and camping in National Parks around Victoria including Wilson’s Promontory, The Grampians, Little Desert and the Murray River. From an early age, I was interested in natural and wild places which grew from my love of bushwalking. Painting and drawing became a passion for me during my early teenage years, from where it has developed into my life’s vocation.
After graduating with Distinctions in Painting and Print making from R.M.I.T. Faculty of Fine Art in 1986, I worked from an Artist studio attached to my home in St Kilda, Victoria. I made a complete departure from the Surreal ‘urban landscape’ type work done while at Art School and started on the path that has led to my present artwork, based on observation of the subject and intuitive construction of the composition. (See my General Artwork Description for more details )
Through various part-time/ casual laboring and other unskilled jobs from 1984 to 89 I was able to make 5 Summer bushwalking and sketching trips to Tasmania’s wild mountain and coastal country. The sketches made on these trips were later used as inspiration for my studio work during and after Art School.
For a 3 year period from mid 1989 I travelled through Southern Asia, from India through to Turkey (including Nepal, Pakistan and Iran). I then worked in hotels in Edinburgh and the Highlands of Scotland before traveling through Europe, India, Nepal and South-East Asia. I continued sketching and developing my work which was also enhanced by the travel experiences during this time.
After completing a Teaching Diploma in Melbourne in 1993 I moved to Hobart, Tasmania where I have been based since early 1994. After my earlier trips there and my time spent in the Himalayas and the Scottish Highlands, Tasmania was the natural choice for me as a place to live and work as an Artist. Its landscapes have been a constant source of inspiration through sketching and observation of the landforms and structures and for developing studio based artworks. Along with sales of my artwork, I have supported my Art practice through casual/ part-time relief and English language teaching and exhibition coordinating. While I have been based in Tasmania this work (along with overseas teaching jobs) has helped me make regular extended working trips of up to 2 years or more to various parts of Europe, Asia, North Africa and Latin America.
